Where we are serving
We landed here at the JAARS center in Waxhaw, NC (around 25mi from Charlotte) a little over eight years ago (June, 1998) to use our technical skills to further Bible translation worldwide.
JAARS is the technical arm of Wycliffe Bible translators supplying the aviation, computers, specialized translation software, e-mail, satellite communications, marine safety, etc. It was founded around 58 years ago by Cameron Townsend, who founded Wycliffe some decades earlier.
NOTE: Though we serve Bible translators through JAARS-WYCLIFFE, for nearly 40 years we are missionaries with Christians in Action Missions, Intl. of Woodlake, CA (who handles our support also).
We serve here under a secondment contract between our mission and JAARS which was just renewed for another 4 years last month. (See Bruce Young in the HR dept.)
What we do
Irene spent her first year in Admin & the last seven years keyboarding Bible manuscripts through Wycliffe Associates, mainly for overseas entities who have never had an electronic version required for printing or possibly new ones. She has helped keyboard 30 so far from all over the world.
I've been on the Speech Tools software development team, the first five years as a Research Assistant, then two years as the sole programmer on Phonology Assistant, an audio database holding thousands of recording samples translators use to develop hypotheses of the phonological rules of unwritten languages. After some more sharp younger programmers arrived I was moved to testing where I serve now. I write test procedures and often have to invent ways to localize and track down where and when bugs occur so the programmers can work on them since the computer code for either Speech Analyzer of Phonology Assistant runs into something like 20,000 or more pages!.
Current Projects
Irene just finished her latest Bible keyboarding assignment and is waiting for her next one which should arrive in a few days.
I (Tom) am doing final testing of a totally new version of both Speech Analyzer and Phonology Assistant that are Unicode compatible and both using new paradigms given by our Software Guidance Team. (Our overall project development is directed by a team of Bible translators who initiate specifications which will help them the most worldwide.) Though I'm officially transferred to the Test department, I'm in the same office doing final testing on Speech Tools which I know so well.
