Our prayer request (updated February 2009):

Dear Praying Friends,
Although Marc has been chief correspondent for the past couple months, I have assumed the role today in hopes of giving you an update on my health.

  • It has been over 1 month since my surgery for breast cancer. There are many things I remember about that day (and much that I don’t, according to family and friends who were there J ) but I will share 3 things that were significant for me. First, before being prepped for surgery, our pastor met us at the hospital to pray for me. In the midst of all that was going to transpire that day, those few minutes were precious for me. I felt loved.
  • Second, as I was being prepared for surgery, one of my required tasks was to write “yes” on the cancerous breast with a felt tip marker. A necessary exercise both for my protection and the surgeons, but it was a very emotional one nonetheless. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I audibly declared, “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” Even that difficult day was a day that God had ordained for me and I wanted to acknowledge my trust in Him. The nurse reappeared, took the pen, and hugged me. I felt loved.
  • Third, when I woke up to my hospital room after surgery, I was greeted by the sweet smiles of my husband and children and 4 beautiful pink roses (one from each child). I felt loved.
  • My surgery went well. I had a modified radical mastectomy, a lymph node biopsy, and an expander inserted by a plastic surgeon in preparation for the reconstruction process. My only setback was having to go back into surgery on January 13 th. I had my incision opened and re-stitched because it wasn’t healing which has made the recovery period a little longer. Thankfully, the pathology report came back negative for any infection or cancer. I was able to have the stitches removed the next Friday.
  • Because of the location and the aggressive nature of my tumor, a mastectomy was the prescribed initial treatment. After meeting with my team of doctors over the past several weeks, it has been determined that I do not need to undergo chemotherapy as part of my treatment plan. The post surgery pathology report showed no spread of the cancer and no lymph node involvement. Of course, we are both relieved and thankful for such good news. I will continue to see my oncologist and breast surgeon for monitoring every 6 months and will soon continue the process of reconstruction which will include additional surgeries in March and August.
  • We have experienced an outpouring of love from so many and are humbled by all the ways God has met our needs since my diagnosis in November. The generous financial gifts are helping with the myriad of medical expenses we have and will incur. Meals, flowers, housecleaning, phone calls, emails, books and notes of encouragement have helped sustain and encourage us. I have felt loved.
  • I would appreciate your continued prayers. I am feeling better each day but am still very sore and get tired easily. Sometimes I still cry and get fearful. At the same time, I have seen the handprints of my God all over my life and for that I am so grateful. I have felt loved!

The Culture
We continue to minister to an increasingly open student culture, bankrupt of family and moral values, but students are looking for an authentic relationship and a safe community. Jesus is the one who provides that and transforms lives.
