| As a boy growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana, I always looked forward to spending a couple of weeks each summer with my maternal grandparents in Hawesville, Kentucky. Ira and Verna Thomas lived in a simple two story home on River Street, so named because it fronted by the L& N (Louisville & Nashville) rail- road tracks overlooking the beautiful Ohio River. The best part of the trip down Highway 37 was crossing the river on the ferry boat. My Granddaddy Thomas sometimes arranged for me to ride across the river if he had a job in Cannelton or Tell City, Indiana. The ferry Captain, Jim Roberts, would let me get up in the wheelhouse with him and even let me blow the whistle once in a while. Historically, the Ohio River was part of the Mason-Dixon Line separating north and south in those dark days of the Civil War in America. For me it was the means of transporting barges west toward the Mississippi River or east toward the Monongahela and Allegheny at Pittsburg.
Occasionally, during the WWII years, my eyes would spot a gray naval vessel making its way on the Ohio River. I held my breathe in awe of the sleek ship cutting its way effortlessly through the water. Forgive that nostalgic paragraph triggered by memories of river songs like "Shenandoah". Remember the words, "O Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Away you rolling river, O Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Away, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri." That song reflects the love the pioneer songwriter had for the Shenandoah River. Yet he felt compelled to leave its beauty and go west. His love for the familiar rooted him, but the pull of something better won his heart. My river of memory is the Ohio. For me, it ushered me into summer adventures at my grandparents. It took me away from the safety and familiar of home. I've sometimes wondered what went through the mind of Abraham when he was called out of Ur to follow God to the Promised Land. He had to leave everything that was familiar to him. Genesis 12:1, 2b "The Lord had said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you…and I will bless you."Despite the idolatry of that pagan city, Abraham had probably grown attached to the comfort of his home, the variety of the food, and the fellowship of his friends. But Abraham left the familiar to follow God's leading. Hebrews 11:8 "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."
A poet said it this way: Fulfillment on life's journey comes when we in faith obey The leading of our loving God- He'll not lead us astray. - Sper
You don't need to see the way if you follow the One who is the Way. We are going on an Adventure this year as a Church Family. The theme of our adventure is FAITH IN ACTION. I believe we will be specially blessed as we obey our Lord, reaching out in many different ways to serve Him by serving our community in His Name. Christ may call you to go, not across the ocean or river but maybe across the street, around the corner, across town to deliver the love of Jesus as you meet a need, lend a hand, encourage someone who is down. Hebrews 12:1, 2 "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus on whom our faith depends from beginning to end." Several asked me for a copy of a poem I shared Sunday about a boy competing in a race. He has fallen down three times. Each time his dad has urged him to get up and win the race.
Defeat! He lay there silently, a tear dropped from his eye. There's no sense running anymore-three strikes, I'm out-why try? The will to rise had disappeared; all hope had fled away, so far behind, so error prone, closer all the way. I've lost, so what's the use, he thought, I'll live with my disgrace. But then he thought about his dad who soon he's have to face. Get up and take your place. You were not meant for failure here, so get up and win the race. With borrowed will, Get up, it said you haven't lost at all, for winning is not more than this- to rise each time you fall. So up he rose to win once more, and with a new commit, he resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldn't quit. So far behind the others now, the most he'd ever been, still he gave it all he had and ran as though to win. Three times he's fallen stumbling, three times he rose again, too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end. They cheered the winning runner as he crossed, first place, head high and proud and happy; no falling, no disgrace. But when the fallen youngster crossed the line, last place, the crowd gave him the greater cheer for finishing the race. And even though he came in last, with head bowed low, unproud; you would have thought he won the race, to listen to the crowd. And to his dad he sadly said, I did- n't do so well. To me, you won, his father said. You rose each time you fell. And now when things seem dark and hard and difficult to face, the memory of that little boy helps me in my race. For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all, and all you have to do to win-is rise each time you fall. Quit! Give up, you're beaten they still shout in my face. But another voice within me says, Get up and win that race.
Let's run together this year and experience Victory in Jesus!
Pastor Bob

Cause He Gave His Everything "That's Why We Praise Him"
Words and Music by Tommy Walker ©Copyright 1998 WeMobile Music/BMI
That's why we praise Him; that's why we sing.
That's why we offer Him our everything.
That's why we bow down and worship this King,
'Cause He gave His everything, 'cause He gave His everything.
Here we approach the Christian celebration of Easter, the highest point in the Church Calendar. Really, it's the most wonderful time of the year as Easter proclaims the power of God in Jesus to conquer even death. And this is Good News to all who believe. As the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit in Romans 10:9, states "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (NIV). Therefore, if you and I have not only recited but experienced this verse, you and I are saved, redeemed children of the King, Hallelujah! That's reason enough to praise Him and in the same way He [Jesus] gave His everything to the point of death, you and I ought to give our all, our very lives. Sure, it might sound inspiring and even extreme to some; however, I really believe Jesus preached that message to His followers and modeled it all the way to the cross. In John 12:23- 25, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life." Jesus' message to His followers throughout His earthly ministry was consistent, "Take up your cross and follow me," and this message is still the same today. Now, in a consumer-oriented society, this message of selflessness and surrender is not popular. Even in Christian circles, such as churches, this message of sacrifice is eloquently preached yet rarely lived out. It can be seen as admirable and even commendable; yet it applies to others, "not me." Therefore, my challenge to us is to examine our lives and ask, "Have I given my all to God for the sake of His kingdom?" How might that look in each one of our lives? It will be different in every case; nevertheless, the foundational principle will be the same: as Jesus gave His everything, I will sacrificially do the same for His purposes. It might mean a career change or focus, giving up a relationship for His sake or a possible call into a less lucrative style of living, etc. As someone said, praise God Jesus did not say, "I do not do crosses." May we follow His example and give our all 'cause He gave His everything! In the words of the hymn writer, Isaac Watts, "Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!
The following lyrics are set to a beautiful song the Celebration Choir and Band will be doing on Easter Sunday. I could not wait to share it with you all. Please take a moment, perhaps as part of your quiet time, to ponder and assimilate the powerful message within these words. Have a blessed Easter!
"The Empty Room" ( Words and Music by Rick Vale)
An angel waits beside the door, His messenger, as times before,
But the news that this day brings makes weeping voices sing,
For this grave is now a garden, nothing more.
They come in silence, come in grief. His death has tortured their belief,
But the angel smiles when they see the stone is rolled away
And He speaks the words that give their souls relief.
Why do you look for life among the dead?
He is not here; He's risen as He said.
And this place you call a tomb now is just an empty room.
Turn around and follow where His life has led.
We take the cup and bread He gave, but do you know His power to save?
That the reason for His pain was to free you from your chains?
So why do you still wait beside the grave?
The Angel's message is for you from God, the Faithful and the True,
That the Flesh who is the Word has now proven what you've heard.
"Behold," He says, "I'm making all things new."
Why do you look for life among the dead?
He is not here; He's risen as He said.
And this place you call a tomb now is just an empty room.
Turn around and follow Him. Turn around and live again.
Turn around and follow where His life has led

THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES…FOR THE PURPOSE OF GODLINESS
(Excerpt from, "Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life", by Donald S. Whitney)
Ours is an undisciplined age. The old disciplines are breaking down…Above all, the discipline of divine grace is derided as legalism or is entirely unknown to a generation that is largely illiterate in the Scriptures. We need the rugged strength of Christian character that can come only from discipline. V. Raymond Edman
"The Disciplines of Life" Discipline without direction is drudgery.
Imagine six-year-old Kevin, whose parents have enrolled him in music lessons. After school every afternoon, he sits in the living room and reluctantly strums "Home on the Range" while watching his buddies play baseball in the park across the street. That's discipline without direction. It's drudgery.
Now suppose Kevin is visited by an angel one afternoon during guitar practice. In a vision he's taken to Carnegie Hall. He's shown a guitar virtuoso giving a concert. Usually bored by classical music, Kevin is astonished by what he sees and hears. The musician's fingers dance excitedly on the strings with fluidity and grace. Kevin thinks of how stupid and klunky his hands feel when they halt and stumble over the chords. The virtuoso blends clean, soaring notes into a musical aroma that wafts from his guitar. Kevin remembers the toneless, irritating discord that comes stumbling out of his. But Kevin is enchanted. His head tilts slightly to one side as he listens. He drinks in everything. He never imagined that anyone could play the guitar like this. "What do you think, Kevin?" asks the angel.
The answer is a soft, slow, six-year-old's, "W-o-w!" The vision vanishes, and the angel is again standing in front of Kevin in his living room. "Kevin," says the angel, "the wonderful musician you saw is you in a few years." Then pointing at the guitar, the angel declares, "But you must practice!"
Suddenly the angel disappears and Kevin finds himself alone with his guitar. Do you think his attitude toward practice will be different now? As long as he remembers what he's going to become, Kevin's discipline will have a direction, a goal that will pull him into the future. Yes, effort will be involved, but you could hardly call it drudgery.
When it comes to discipline in the Christian life, many believers feel as Kevin did toward guitar practice-it's discipline without direction. Prayer threatens to be drudgery. The practical value of meditation on Scripture seems uncertain. The real purpose of a Discipline like fasting is often unclear.
First we must understand what we shall become. It is said of God's elect in Romans 8:29, "For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son." God's eternal plan ensures that every Christian will ultimately conform Christ likeness. We will be changed "when He appears" so that "we shall be like Him") 1 John 3:2). This is no vision; this is you, Christian, in a few years. So why all the talk about discipline? If God has predestined our conformity to Christ likeness, where does discipline fit in? Although God will grant Christ likeness to us when Jesus returns, until then He intends for us to grow toward that Christ likeness. We aren't merely to wait for holiness, we're to pursue it. "Make every effort to life in peace with all men and to be holy," we're commanded in Hebrews 12:14, for "without holiness no one will see the Lord."
This leads us to ask what every Christian should ask, "How then shall we pursue holiness? How can we be like Jesus Christ, the Son of God?" We find a clear answer in 1 Timothy 4:7: "Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness." I hope in the next few months to address some of the spiritual disciplines, and the importance of each as they pertain to our relationship to God. Until then, please begin to ask God, "What areas Lord am I lacking? Where do I need to grow?"
In His Discipleship, Brandon
