“Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.”                                                (Romans 12:9-10)

God desires that we honor:

  • Your Father and Mother –

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”                                                                                                          (Exodus 20:12)

  • Those in Authority –

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves… Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.  This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.  Give to everyone what you owe them:  if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”

          (Romans 13:1-2 & 5-7)

  • Church Leaders –

“The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.”                                     (1st Timothy 5:17)

Honoring One Another Involves:

  1. Recognizing and Rewarding People

“Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.”

(1st Timothy 5:3)

  1. Refusing to be Arrogant and “Thinking too highly of yourself.”

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you:  Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”                                                                                 (Romans 12:3)

  1. Responding to Others with Humility and Grace

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

                                                                                                                        (Philippians 2:3-4)

  1. Relating to People in a God Honoring Way that Communicates Value

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:  Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!  Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father… for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”                                                                                            (Philippians 2:5-11 & 13)
