But concerning Israel he says, `All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.’  I ask then:  Did God reject his people?  By no means!  I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.  God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew.  Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah – how he appealed to God against Israel:  `Lord, they have killed your prophets  and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me’?  And what was God’s answer to him?  `I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’  So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.  And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.  What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.  The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,…”

                                                                                                                        (Romans 10:21-11:7)

“Granted.  But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith.  Do not be arrogant, but tremble.  For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.  Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God:  sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness.  Otherwise, you also will be cut off.  And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.  After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!                                         (Romans 11:20-24)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  This is what the ancients were commended for.”                                                 (Hebrews 11:1-2)

Standing in the Faith Involves:

  1. Praying for the Salvation of Others; the Jewish People as well as Gentiles

“Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.  For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.                                                                                                              (Romans 10:1-2)

  1. Preparing for the Return of Christ and the Fulfillment of God’s Promises

“Again I ask:  Did they (Israel) stumble so as to fall beyond recovery?  Not at all!  Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.  But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!”                            (Romans 11:11-12)

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that God exists and that God rewards those who earnestly seek Him.  By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.  By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.  By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”            (Hebrews 11:6-8)

“`Therefore let all Israel be assured of this:  God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.’  When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, `Brothers, what shall we do?’  Peter replied, `Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.’  With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, `Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’  Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”                                                                                                          (Acts 2:36-41)

  1. Presenting Jesus and the Gospel of Jesus Christ

“I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:  Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way (and so) all Israel will be saved.  As it is written:  `The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.  And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.’”                                                                     (Romans 11:25-27)

“Then Jesus came to them and said, `All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

 (Matthew 28:18-20)

“A new command I give you:  Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must (can consider or think about, you get to decide) love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”                                                    (John 13:34-35)
